AMNET: Americas' Network for Chronic Disease Surveillance

AMNET

AMNET is Americas' Network for Chronic Disease Surveillance. The Network is supported by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA), PAHO/WHO (Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, USA), Health Canada, the Ministry of Health of Finland and the Ministries of Health of such countries of the Americas as Venezuela, Honduras, and Guatemala, among others. It is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) registered in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Objectives

  • Promote chronic disease surveillance.
  • Translate knowledge into action.
  • Build capacities in public health in the Americas (North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean region).
  • Promote the integration of governmental and nongovernmental organizations that will advance training in chronic disease surveillance and prevention in the populations of the Americas.

Every year AMNET hold a three- to four-day meeting to strengthen capacities in public health, aimed at professionals dedicated to public health in all the countries of the Americas. Information on these meetings can be found on the AMNET website. Among AMNET's other activities is the network information bulletin published on its website. It contains up-to-date articles on chronic disease with information in English and Spanish. Also published are new methods and tools for chronic disease surveillance and prevention, risk factor prevention, translation of knowledge into action, program evaluation, and international health. Finally, through the AMNET site one can obtain data from experts and establish communication with them, thus receiving professional consultation on public health.
