simex2015-iconThe SIMEX INSARAG 2015 simulation exercise was carried out from 22-26 September 2015 in Santiago, Chile. The exercise implemented procedures, protocols and a coordination methodology among national and international actors, in response to a high magnitude earthquake that would require international assistance.

The exercise was organized by the Chilean National Office for Emergencies (ONEMI) and Chile Firefighters, in coordination with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), who is in charge of activating and coordinating the Urban Search and Rescue Teams (USAR), through the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

The Hemispheric Consultation on Indigenous People and Disaster Risk Reduction will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, from 11-12 September. Participants will be coming from Bolivia, Canada, Dominica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and USA, countries that have high risk of disasters and the presence of indigenous populations. It aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the disaster risks and needs faced by indigenous populations, as well as their accumulated experience in building resilience to disasters.

The Fourth Session of the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction of the Americas (RP14) recognized the importance of having and promoting national initiatives on safe hospitals and the need to protect essential services, particularly those dedicated to providing health care and education. The RP14 was held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, from 27 - 29 May. Parallel to the Platform, PAHO's Department of Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief hosted a meeting for Health Disaster Coordinators. In addition, prior to these activities, a Course on Rapid Response, aimed at strengthening PAHO's Regional Response Team, was held on the 26th.
