This publication presents the main actions for monitoring the quality of drinking water during emergency and disaster situations. This is in accordance with the immediate requirements after an adverse event and before the rehabilitation of services in order to guarantee safe water to the affected population. It also describes the actions of monitoring and controlling water quality, parameters of evaluation, and guidelines for properly developing sanitation inspections and processing information.

The guide is targeted towards decision makers, sanitation authorities, professionals and technical institutions for the provision of water, as well as personnel from humanitarian aid agencies that work toward providing safe drinking water to populations affected by emergencies or disasters.
