Breastfeeding and work: let´s make it work!
Breastfeeding benefits babies, mothers and business.
Benefits for the employer include:
- Loyalty with the company as a result of gratitude and satisfaction
- Reduced absenteeism because babies get sick less often and less severely
- Retention of employees (reducing the need of training and the loss of qualified personnel)
- Improved productivity
Governments, employers, work colleagues and the community can support mothers who work outside the house to breastfeed their babies. The basic accomodations to be provided are: Maternity leave, nursing room at the workplace and reduced work hours or flexible schedule while breastfeeding.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August in more than 170 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. PAHO/WHO actively promotes breastfeeding as the best source of nourishment for infants and young children. It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration signed in August 1990 by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF and other organizations to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
