- PAHO warns: noncommunicable diseases threaten economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean 2016-09-30
Noncommunicable diseases-including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer-are a major threat to economic growth and development in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, especially low- and middle-income countries, warned experts from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and other organizations. Investing in prevention and control of these diseases is needed to mitigate the impact of these diseases, the experts said.

Since 2014, when the Member States of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) unanimously endorsed the goal of achieving universal access to health and universal coverage, progress for most of the region's countries has been hampered by sluggish economic growth, the rising costs of medicines, and growing demand for care due to aging populations and increases in noncommunicable diseases.
