Washington, D.C., May 17, 2018 (PAHO/WHO) - The Pan American Health Organization´s (PAHO/WHO) alliance with the Organization of American States (OAS) has awarded nearly 700 scholarships to students in 27 OAS Member States for specializations, masters and doctorates in health-related fields at universities in Brazil and Mexico.

The scholarships have benefited professionals from the Americas who pursued postgraduates' studies in health disciplines and other disciplines that also contribute to the improvement of social determinants of health. This collaboration between OAS and PAHO is geared towards strengthening national health and health research systems, and supports human resources for health in the Region.

PAHO provides monitoring, evaluation, and technical guidance on health matters in this collaboration, and offers technical resources that enable scholars to deliver quality research that addresses national priorities. This alliance involves a commitment of both institutions to place education as one of the determinants of health and to strengthen technical and research skills among human resources for health.

The scholarship programs are in collaboration with the OAS and its partners the Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities (GCUB) in Brazil, and the Mexican National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT) and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) in Mexico.
