Washington, D.C., October 5, 2018 (PAHO/WHO)- From 2-4 October, 2018, delegates from 24 countries of the Region participated in the XI Pan American Conference on Pharmaceutical Education (PCFE), in Quito, Ecuador, to promote cooperation and debate among pharmacy faculties and schools in the Americas.

During the meeting, participants agreed on the "Declaration 2018 of the Mission, Principles and Elements of Pharmaceutical Education in the Americas", which seeks to serve as a framework for the implementation of professional objectives and profiles, curricula, competences, practices and other actions related to pharmacy careers in the countries of the Americas.

The Declaration aims for pharmaceutical education to provide students with the necessary skills (knowledge, attitudes and values) to perform under the proposed model for pharmaceutical services based on primary health care (PHC) as part of the integrated networks of health services. It also proposes key elements on other pharmacists´ functions, such as those related to industrial pharmacy, the regulation of medicines and other health technologies, research, teaching and health policy.

The XI PCFE involved the participation of deans and representatives of the main pharmacy schools of Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The PCFE have been held every two or three years, with PAHO/WHO support, and seeks to promote cooperation among the pharmacy schools and faculties in the Americas; as well as contribute to the exchange of ideas and establish a discussion forum for topics of interest in the field of Pharmaceutical Education.
