It provides an updated and nuanced picture of the disability resulting from mental, substance use, and specific neurological disorders and self-harm alone and in combination with premature mortality; the imbalance between mental health spending and its related disease burden; and the inadequate allocation of the meager mental health spending.

It offers information and data on the Region’s progress towards the achievement of objectives and targets of the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013–2020 and PAHO’s Plan of Action on Mental Health 2015-2020 and serves as an important tool for developing and planning mental health services in the Americas.
