Asunción, 15 March 2019 (PAHO/WHO)- Health sector reform, as well as the possibilities of increasing investment and improving the quality of health spending, were some of the issues addressed by Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Benigno López, during a meeting held on 14 March.

During the meeting, they discussed the main challenges to achieving universal health coverage, faced by Paraguay. Health financing is a priority issue on the Paraguayan government’s agenda.

The Director of PAHO highlighted the Ministry of Health’s initiative to implement the application and promotion of selective taxes, for example on tobacco products, to increase the financing of public health services.
