La comunicación de riesgos se refiere al intercambio, en tiempo real, de información entre expertos y/o funcionarios y personas quienes se enfrentan a una amenaza o riesgo. Su fin primordial es que los individuos afectados sean capaces de tomar decisiones informadas que les permita mitigar los efectos de la amenaza y tomar las medidas y acciones de protección y prevención.

guyana lymphatic filariasis cover 150Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-transmitted disease caused by parasitic worms that damage the lymphatic system, leading to chronic disabling consequences such as lymphoedema, hydrocele and elephantiasis. The Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) established by WHO aims to stop the spread of infection and alleviate suffering among patients. WHO recommends mass drug administration (MDA) and morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) to achieve these goals. Guyana is one of only four countries in the Region of the Americas where LF, caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, is a public health problem. To stop the spread of the infection, the endemic areas of the country must be mapped and if the antigenemia level is ≥2%, the entire at-risk population of each Implementation Unit must be treated.

GENEVA (3 July 2018) -  Political leaders in France and Italy must immediately stop using "leprosy" as a metaphor in debates on nationalism, says a UN human rights expert. "Remarks reportedly made by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Luigi Di Maio, in which leprosy was used as a metaphor for a rise in nationalism, are appalling," said Alice Cruz, the Special Rapporteur on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their family members.
