66th World Health Assembly Coverage

The 66th World Health Assembly will took place in Geneva on 20-28 May 2013.

The World Health Assembly is the supreme decision—making body of WHO. It is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board.

The main functions of the World Health Assembly are to determine the policies of the Organization, appoint the Director—General, supervise financial policies, and review and approve the proposed programme budget. The Health Assembly is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland.

Carissa F. Etienne, PAHO/WHO Director, from the Lancet's new Series on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Latin America: In the past few decades, important policies and strategic initiatives in health and development have been embraced by Latin America, with the active participation and support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), WHO, and other partners. As democratic processes in the region are consolidated, with increasing decentralisation and greater social inclusion in decision making, there is an increasingly large and structured social demand for equity in access to health care, consistent with the principles of the WHO Constitution of 1948: "the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being…".

The World Health Assembly this week elected 12 countries as members of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board. Three of the countries—Argentina, Brazil and Suriname—are from the Americas.


At today's session of the 66th World Health Assembly, committees met to debate resolutions on the health of women and children, the social determinants of health and "health in all policies," and the implementation of the International Health Regulations, among other subjects.


Delegates from countries of the Americas at the 66th World Health Assembly have expressed strong support for the goal of universal health coverage and the inclusion of health as a central component of the post-2015 development agenda.
