The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) is carrying out a project to develop a Interinstitutional University Registry of Cancer (RUCI / UASD), which allows to estimate the incidence and survival at a national level, based on data collected through hospital cancer registries. Another objective of the project is to promote methodological capabilities for the recording and analysis of data in institutions related to cancer prevention and control, in order to use this information for clinical controls, prevention and research in specific groups.

This project responds to the Strategic Plan for the Integrated Control of Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases of the Dominican Republic.

The ultimate goals are to strengthen cancer registries in oncology care centers in the Dominican Republic, create a unique database that gathers the variables of interest of the main cancer care centers of the Dominican Republic, and develop research for the prevention of cancer in the Dominican Republic, as well as the promotion of public policies based on the evidence of the registry.

This project responds to the Strategic Plan for the Integrated Control of Chronic Noncommunicable Diseases of the Dominican Republic (ECNT). This plan establishes prevention and control measures for this group of pathologies based on the need to work intersectorially, in order to know the risk factors that cause and affect people throughout the life cycle, especially those of low economic resources. The ECNT aims to reduce chronic diseases, including cancer, with an emphasis on reducing mortality. To achieve this, the Ministry of Health of the Dominican Republic has carried out participatory activities with different actors of the National Health System, including Universities, with the cooperation of the Pan American Health Organization. This strategic plan also obeys the Regional Plan of Action for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases in the Americas 2013-2019, establishing that noncommunicable diseases are the main cause of disease and premature death and avoidable in the Region of the Americas. This project, one of the winners of the winners of the call for proposals for the implementation of IS4H projects promoted by the Pan American Health Organization, is committed to linking these national and regional plans, faithfully respecting each of its objectives.
