Leishmaniasis

In the Americas, leishmaniasis is a public health problem due to its morbidity, mortality, high magnitude, and wide geographic distribution. The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), through the Regional Program for Leishmaniasis, along with the endemic countries, have developed the Leishmaniasis Plan of Actions for the Americas, 2017-2022 with the objective of reducing morbidity and mortality from leishmaniasis in the region by strengthening diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, surveillance, and control.

One of the surveillance actions is to provide knowledge of a disease, as well as of the determining and conditioning factors. In 2012, the Regional Program for Leishmaniasis developed the Regional Leishmaniasis Information System - SisLeish- with the objective of providing an updated and consolidated database to support the strengthening of the surveillance system in order to analyze data, generate knowledge, identify and stratify risk areas, as well as propose surveillance and control actions. SisLeish is a system that generates epidemiological, clinical, and operational indicators, as well as it presents regional, sub regional, and national analyzes by the 1st and 2nd sub-national administrative levels, which must be interpreted and used as a tool to support decision-making, and surveillance and control actions against leishmaniasis. The data available in the PLISA come from SisLeish, which are included annually by the national programs and/or surveillance services. The data have been made available to the general public as agreed by the Member States.
