The avian flu caused by the Influenza A virus, Subtype H5N1, has produced few human cases to date. Since our last update of 5 March 2004, 1 new human case of avian influenza has been reported, which brings the total to 34 cases and 22 deaths.

Since our last update of 11 March 2004, one new and fatal human case has been reported, which brings the total to 34 cases and 23 deaths. The number of human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) reported appears to be stable.

Since the beginning of December 2003, 8 countries and territories in Asia (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, South Korea, Thailand, and Viet Nam) have confirmed in their reports to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) the existence of outbreaks Avian Influenza A...

Since our last update on 5 February 2004, 4 new human cases of avian influenza have been confirmed in Viet Nam-out of which 3 have died-and 1 more in Thailand who is still alive.

Since our last update on 12 February 2004, 6 new human cases of avian flu H5N1 and ensuing 3 deaths have been reported, which brings the total to 31 human cases and 22 deaths.

Since our last update of 19 February 2004, 1 new human case of avian influenza has been reported, bring the total to 32 cases and 22 deaths. To date, 2 Asian countries have reported cases in humans...

Since our last update of 26 February 2004, 1 new human case of avian influenza has been reported, bringing the total to 33 cases and 22 deaths.

Of all people receiving medical attention at sentinel centers up to Epidemiological Week (EW) 44 (to 1 November 2003), 18% of them showed signs of flu syndrome (n = 902,930).

During Epidemiological Week (EW) 42 (from 12–18 October 2003), the overall proportion of visits to sentinel providers by patients suffering from influenza-like illness (ILI) was 1.9%, a rate less than the national baseline of 2.5%.

During Epidemiological Week (EW) 43 (19–25 October 2003), 1.8% of all patient visits to sentinel providers was for influenza-like illness (ILI), a figure below the national baseline of 2.5%.

During Epidemiological Week (EW) 44 (from 25 October to 1 November 2003), the overall proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for flu-like symptoms or influenza-like illness (ILI) was 2.2%, less than the national baseline of 2.5%.

WHO (World Health Organization) and NSSREV (National Surveillance System of Respiratory and Enteric Viruses) collaborating laboratories tested 1,056 samples for influenza, of which 203 (19.2%) were positive: 170 for unsubtyped Influenza A, 30 for Influenza A Subtype H3N2, 3 for Influenza B.
